The Gujarat Titans won a five-wicket victory against the Chennai Super Kings in the opening of the 2023 IPL on Friday (March 31), but Kane Williamson sustained a serious injury during the game, prompting worries about his fitness. The GT started first after winning the draw at the season opener at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. In the 13th of the inning, CSK starter Ruturaj Gaikwad smashed a delivery from Joshua Little into the deep square leg limit. Williamson caught the ball with a bounce and threw it in the air, knowing his momentum would carry it over the ropes. However, in his attempt to save a six, he lost his balance and landed awkwardly, injuring his right knee.

In a post-game press conference after Gujarat’s win, captain Hardik Pandya gave an update on Williamson’s injury:

“I just messaged him. I don’t know about the update. He has gone for the scans. So, once he comes back after the scans and the doctor’s check, then only will be able to know what exactly it is. Right now there is no time frame – what exactly has happened? It is the knee for sure, but I don’t know how serious it is and how much time he will take.”

The veteran New Zealand batsman limped off the pitch in pain. Williamson, via the Impact Player rule, replaced B Sai Sudharsan.
