Qatar will host the Men’s World Cup 2027 as International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has chosen the country to host the tournament. Though the federation has declared Qatar as the host it did not reveal whether there were any other bidders as well.
FIBA in their announcement made no references to the massive criticism Qatar faced for the treatment of the migrant labor force in the 12-year-long construction project for the World Cup. Doha, Qatar will be hosting all the games in the 32-team event, FIBA also mentioned that Doha has upgraded its subway & public transport networks. In a statement issued by FIBA the Switzerland-based governing body said, “With all of the teams playing in the same city, fans can plan everything far in advance and enjoy a unique experience since all venues are within 30 minutes of each other”.
“Additionally, all venues to be used for FIBA’s flagship men’s event are already constructed, while widely used green technologies will help in delivering the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 as a carbon-neutral event.”
The Qatar team will automatically qualify as the host team. Adding to this FIBA also announced that the 2026 Women’s World Cup will be played in Berlin, Germany with all tournaments of the 16 teams happening there. Additionally, along with hosting the 2027 Men’s World Cup Qatar has a long-term goal of hosting the Olympics for which it has already been picked for 2028 & 2032.
