Wasim Jaffer justifies Shubhman Gill’s opening place in Indian Team

Down and out once losing the primary 2 ODIs against Bangladesh, the Indian team bounced back exceptionally to win the third ODI and save some pride. The match did not simply see the veteran Virat Kohli bagging his 72nd international hundred but also Ishan Kishan smashing a ‘record-breaking’ double century within the 50-over format. As Ishan Kishan has intelligibly reinforced his position in India’s ODI squad, former India opener Wasim Jaffer is feeling unhappy about how this will affect the selection issue with Shubman Gill.

Current opening performance of Shubhman Gill

Gill has been doing very well for the Indian team in the 50-over format, building a bunch of runs but he wasn’t even picked for the ODI series against the Bangla Tigers. Wasim Jaffer, in an exceeding video on Cricinfo, stated that Kishan’s double ton currently puts him on edge above Shubman within the ladder so much. The cause behind this is the openers for the ODI format are concerned.

“Ishan Kishan puts himself ahead of Shubman Gill now. I feel a bit unhappy for Gill, he was the front-runner before this innings. He was the third opener in the line once Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan. But now he is going to be in the fourth spot. Generally, you may feel why Gill isn’t in the squad, there’s nothing wrong that he did,” same Jaffer.

Jaffer remains of the opinion that Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma are going to be India’s most well-liked openers pairing in ODIs. Though he did admit that a decision must be taken concerning the southpaw who hasn’t been within the better of variety of late.

“He did very well in New Zealand and with no matter the different opportunities he got. However, we’ve got seen in the recent past that many players miss out and dropped off. This is often currently planning to place them in another dilemma. Who are their third and fourth openers and what to try to do with Shikhar Dhawan? He’s the senior opener and he has had a nasty series. They might wish to back him because of the type of record he has. But still, No.3 and No.4 choices for openers are going to be an issue mark,” he asserted.
