The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will host Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Game 17 of the IPL 2023 on Wednesday (April 12) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Chennai has won twice and lost one game after three complete games and is fifth in the points table. They will seek their third consecutive win at home after losing their season opener and give their legendary captain MS Dhoni a memorable gift.
It should be noted that 41-year-old Dhoni will be playing his 200th game as CSK captain in the IPL. Dhoni has led in 213 games (in IPL 2016 he led the now-defunct Rising Pune Warriors in 13 games), winning 125 and losing 87 with a win ratio of 58.96. No other captain has touched the 150 mark, while Rohit Sharma of the Mumbai Indians (MI), the five-titled IPL captain, is in second place (146 games).
Therefore, the Yellow Army will be desperate to win the matchup against the RR, led by Sanju Samson, who is second overall, for Thala Dhoni. Dhoni has been the face of CSK since the tournament began in 2008. With him, Chennai has won the IPL championship four times (2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021) and finished second in five seasons (2008, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2019). In addition, under Dhoni’s captaincy, CSK twice won the now-defunct Champions League (CLT20). On the eve of Dhoni’s historic game, Ravindra Jadeja told reporters, “What can I say? He is a legend of Indian cricket. So I want to wish him luck. Hopefully, we’ll win in his 200th game in Chepauk and all the fans will be happy. So, let’s keep the momentum going. Hopefully, we win tomorrow and gift him in his 200th game (IPL) as captain.”
