Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has named Hardik Pandya and Prithvi Shaw as possible future captains. Hardik’s choice to lead the Gujarat Titans to his IPL title in the inaugural season is intelligible. However, Shaw is a surprise pick because he hasn’t played for the country since July 2021. Hardik, on the other hand, could be Rohit Sharma’s successor in the T20I format.
India lost to England in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup, after which Hardik was asked to replace Rohit, at least in the shortest form of the game. “Hardik Pandya is clearly lined up. But that would be unfortunate for Rohit, as I think just judging the captain at an ICC event is probably not the right way to judge him,” Gambhir during an event of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI.
Speaking further about the Shaw, Gambhir said:
“The reason I chose Prithvi Shaw is that a lot of people talk about his off-field work, but that’s the job of the coach and the selectors. It is also about guiding people on the right path.”
I think Prithvi Shaw can be a very aggressive captain, a very successful captain.
Shaw was late and unpopular, and in India, he struggled to earn a spot in the second-highest white ball team. The right-hander was suspended for a doping violation in 2019, and his fitness has come under scrutiny ever since.
