Now, the two-time world champion (1978, 1986) will face Croatia in the semi-finals.
In an ambiguous match, Lionel Messi scored from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute to set up Nahuel Molina’s goal in the first half. Argentina were minutes away from winning the game in regulation time.
However, the Netherlands fought back in the 83rd minute when Wout Weghorst scored with a clear header from a cross.
Weghorst then scored his second goal of the night in the 10th minute of injury time, from a free-kick in extra time. During the nerve-wracking final minutes of the game, duels flew from both sides, even leading to ugly arguments between players.
However, it was the South Americans who showed their willingness to find a winner in extra time, especially in the second half, creating some excellent scoring chances.
Lautaro Martinez, who scored the winning penalty in the shootout, came closest to winning the match in the final minutes of the game, but his shot hit the goalpost.
Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved the first two shots in the shootout from the Dutch as Argentina went on to clinch the nail-biting encounter when Inter Milan striker Martinez scored from the decisive penalty kick.
It was the second time in a row that Argentina won over the Netherlands on penalties in a World Cup match after beating the Europeans in the 2014 World Cup semi-final.
